Spin Cycle: What I am Thankful for

I'll start off by saying that I am thankful for all the usual things: family, friends -- that includes you people too, don't forget that -- pets, and all the other usual suspects. Today though I want to focus on one thing that brings a lot of us together and serves to bring us closer.

Humor.

Sure, the 'love' thing brings us closer, but there's so much commitment involved. You can walk up to total strangers and tell a funny story or (good) joke and have them smiling with you. Now go ahead and tell that same stranger you love them and check your response. Go ahead, I'll wait. You can even make someone of the opposite sex laugh and your spouse won't even get mad at you. Now making love, that's a whole different story...

It heals us and gets us through rough times. I still remember when my mom was going through chemo. It was a rough time, but she could still crack a joke or get us smiling with a story (see, the laughter...it's in my genes.) For me, humor is comforting and can pull me out of foul moods (not that I have many) faster than anything.

I said 'a lot of us' at the beginning because, let's face it, some people no sense of humor. I feel sorry for those people. There just has to be something lacking in a life without humor and laughter. ...but like we used to say in school: "Screw you if you can't take a joke." I think that was grade school, but wisdom comes from all corners.

Seriously though, it seems as though a few of you get a smile out of my blog now and then and I love that. I also love coming by your blogs and laughing out loud with you. Thank you for that.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! (that's belated if you're from Canada, but tough. That will teach you to live so far North.)

Baby cakes, you make me laugh SO HARD every day and I am eternally grateful to you for that.

also for the fact that you are a kick-ass friend and an awesome writer.

...and cute. There's that too.

Oh and I so agree with you about humor. I had a friend in college who told me that she heard her roommate talking to a friend on the phone and laughing harder than she'd ever laughed with *her*. So humor jealousy is possible. I must look into it.

TOP 5!!!!!!

Yeah, humor keeps my mind together, and defines everything I do - parenting, working, blogging, hitch-hiking on the autobahn...

Happy Thanksgiving!

Oh, Sweetness, you do more than make us smile. I've snorted stuff out my nose more times than I care to count when reading your stuff.

Note to self: Stop drinking tea/soda/milk/etc when reading Jim's blog.

But I agree wholeheartedly. If not for my sense of humor, I would have done myself in a long time ago!

Doesn't it take like 6,000 muscles to frown, whereas it only take one to smile...proof enough.

Great attitude. Great humor.

as long as I get in the top 20 I'm happy - I agree with you about the humor. The problem is that I think at times my humor is kinda dark and people just don't get it. I need to work on my humor. I can't seem to write funny stuff.

You know what I think is funny? I think it's funny when someone posts "First!" in your comments and then goes and reads your blog and comes back to post a comment. That makes me smile everytime I see it - maybe I'm just jealous because no one does that on my blog. I have to think that one out.

Dang it, I was vying for Top 10! Humor is so important in life. How else can you express how heinous someone looks in their reindeer sweater? (Sorry, no other words seemed to fit.) You're linked and Happy Thanksgiving!

Absogoddamlutely humour is a wonderful wonderful thing.
Tony says some people don't 'get' his dark humour, you try being British where NO ONE gets it!

Sarcasm and the surreal seem to go over the heads of some - and that's just the people I work with!
maybe I'm just not as funny as I think . . .

My dad had a fantastic sense of humor but had every reason or excuse to be a miserable SOB. He was paralyzed from the chest down in a fall when he was only 47 - but he always smiled & the jokes never stopped. 5 years ago he had a stroke & for the last 4 weeks of his life he had only partial use of one arm & couldn't speak - but he still maintained a remarkable outlook & sense of humor. I'll never forget the crooked, almost frozen smile & his "jokes", using just his eyes to communicate in those final days. Humor & a good nature is terribly undervalued these days. Good Post Jim. Thanks & have a great Thanksgiving.

Laughter is the best medicine. Ever since I took over, I make a point to bring humor into this office every day. My guys appreciate it and we all are happier because of it. I love to make people laugh. It's the most special feeling in the world to make someone smile.

Thanks for the belated Thanksgiving greeting. I convinced my wife that we should support our southern brothers and sister by sharing your Thanksgiving with you, 'cause that's just the kind of guy I am.

Thanks for the laughs.

Yes, humour is very important.

Also: Humour has a silent "u" in it. I insist that it does, no matter what you say.

Happy Thanksgiving ... even if you people do celebrate it late.

Unknown said...

jori-o: Thank you. You do the same :)

jst: It's never too early for eggnog.

Cap'n: Enjoy your second Thanksgiving. Nice negotiating skills.

Trish: It's so silent that we Yanks leave it off. Thank you.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and the family first off. I know that I'm just parroting what others have said, but I'm thankful that you and many others make me smile, chuckle and spit coffee onto my monitor regularly. Thanks.

Happy Thanksgiving!
I like to think I have a sense of humor, but I think mostly people read my blog and feel sorry for me because they don't think I'm funny, they think I drink too much. Or maybe take drugs. I don't know, I've never asked.

We used to say "joke you if you can't take a screw." Whoops, sorry, I know this is a PG rated site.

I love having you come to my blog too! What a blessing to have this kind of medium available.

Humor and music - God knew what he was doing when he gave us those gifts.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

I like the redesign - it's easier on my old eyes.

Humor is SO important. And you sure do make me laugh.

We seem to have a lot in common - PA, age, mom's and chemo.

Ok - heading out now to tell some strangers that I love them ;-)

Sammanthia: Lol..I love your blog. Your blog is not why I think you're on drugs...that's twitter's fault.

Jannie: PG? It ends up how it ends up here. No biggie. Happy Thanksgiving!

Mrs.D: There should be a place we could send humorless people.

thanks for the comment about the pictures I took of my daughter in front of the weird tree with the BIG whole.

You were talking about being thankful... well I asked my four year old what she was thankful for and she said she was thankful that it was Sunny, that's a great reason :) also she was thankful for our chihuahua Sweet Pea... my husband would love to get rid of her but she absolutely adores her...
Have a great turkey day!

Good Lord...51st...

Heinous...you are the bomb. You were one of the very first blogs I stalked and you were one of the very first to comment on my blog. I am so very thankful to know you in the limited sense that I do. I count you among my real friends even though we have never met face to face. You are totally awesome and bring smiles to so many on a daily basis.

I'm going to go now before I get too mushy and ruin my street cred for bitchiness. I totally adore you but you knew that already!

Without humor, there really is no point as far as I'm concerned. Thankfully, my Irish family can find humor in the worst of times; ie, an Irish wake. It's usually dark humor, but it sure is funny!

Hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Oh, and I love the new layout. Very snazzy and yet manly.

Bee said...

I hope your Thanksgiving was full of yummy food. I know mine was! :o)

You're right about humor. If you are smack dab in the middle of a crappy situation, the best thing to get you out of it is asking your the time honored "pull my finger."

Bee said...

I love the new look!

Oh you are so much kinds of aweseome right now. You are so totally right that humor is the best thing in the world. I hope you had a great T-Day with your family!!!

How true! Humor can always make a hard situation appear easier. Make a stranger feel welcome. Stop a small child from crying. Somebody needs to bottle it and sell it. Great Spin!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Lorraine: I can think of a thing or two, but some you can't do in public.

Wendy: Sunny is a good thing to be thankful for. I may be with your husband on the chihuahua, but I'd have to meet her (him?) to be sure.

Kelley: It's a silent U...It's supposed to be spelled Astralia too ;) You're a big cuppa awesome yourself, babe.

Mary Anne: I count you among my real friends too. I seems like just a few days ago when you posted that comment. I won't tell anyone you got all mushy.

Lola: Dark humor is just as good in my book. I'm glad you like the layout.

Bee: Lots of good food was eaten. I'm glad to hear the same was true about yours too.

Krystal: Thank you and I hope you had a great Thanksgiving too.

Kirsty: Thank you for coming by. I can never get it to stay in the bottle. It gets out before I get the cap on.

I always believed that a guy could look like Quazimoto and I wouldn't care...as long as he could make me laugh. A funny guy is a hot sexy guy..plain and simple. I also think that when someone says "you made me laugh"...that is the greatest compliment they could give me...I hear angels sing and the sky is filled with puffy clouds! OH and you made me laugh with that last line...great post!

Nikki: Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the post and I couldn't agree with you more. Thank you for coming by too.

What a find you are! I came via Vodka Mom and am thrilled to find a smart, funny blogger. (Loved the BVM on today's post.) I don't have much time (fragmented days like everyone else) to search for new blogs, find and read the ones that appeal to me, etc... Found a diamond in the rough today. You have a new person to make smile (no pressure though). Adding you to my Reader...

Nice to meet you.
